Hi,

I have a query about this mine, located at NY704324, I think this may be Lord's or Gilbert's Level on Middle Tongue Beck to the west of the Pennine watershed.

Overhearth is adjacent to Troutbeck (edit approx NY 743325) some distance to the east as it descends towards the Tees at Teesside Mine, both levels are shown on the Thanet map so perhaps something needs correcting.

This is part of the McChesney/Moor House research from the 1980/90's

Anyone have a view??, it's a bit niche really :)

Hi Pete,

Just replied to your email.

And thanks for all the other bits, I've got about 50(ish) photos from the McChesney wanderings, on both sides of the watershed but mostly around Troutbeck. Nothing underground but does cover quite a few sites and a short article Anne wrote for one of Moor House's annual reports.

Correction now done c/o Mr Mike, what a good guy.

Just to add to the somewhat confused picture, as mentioned above Don suggested it could be Gilbert's Level, also known as New Silverband (Geol. of Moor House p. 100), which seems to coincide with Middle Tongue mine. Based on christwigg and brooks pics this adit is not the same.

As above, I always had this pegged as Lords level. Things is, in that area, theres more levels than have names.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don''''''''t.

With luck the McChesney's photos and Don Borthwick's comments will nail down half a dozen.

Any thoughts on Middle Tongue/ Gilbert's and New Silverband being the same place? NLS' sidebyside mapping doesn't seem to cover that part of the world so it's not that easy to be confident.

Honestly couldnt say Jim, What I do remember is that there were more levels than I had mapped out before I went up there. At least 3 in the old hush gutter (WSW of the modern opencut) but no idea which was which. To add, none were open but most wouldnt take much to reopen.

What I assumed to be Gilberts Level (based on given NGR in NMRS publication) is closed at portal but theres a fair old stream of water issuing from it so presumably not completely choked.

Damned if you do, and damned if you don''''''''t.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
