Anyone have any idea where this may be.
It smacks of being in the Pool /Camborne area, but that's a pure guess as there's not much to go on.

Mitchells Shaft, East Pool possibly? The houses in the background look very like those in Agar Road.

poke around long enough and you'll find something..

I initially thought that but the stack's on the wrong side, I also thought Robo's at Crofty 'cos the stack's on the correct side but Robo's stack is corbelled where the brick section of the stack starts (unless it was altered in it's early years) the one in the picture doesn't appear to be corbelled at that point, only at the top.

Remember how many times negatives or glass slides get reversed.
Always worth considering. :smartass:

If that was Mitchells shaft with that house in the background being on Agar Rd then the stack would be on the rear left hand corner of the engine house, not the front left hand corner as shown in the picture.

Well....If it's where I think it is I used to live not far round the corner....St Aubyn United (engine shaft) It's high up on a bank by the lane that goes past it and opposite it is a house (Cornwall planning map) It's on the back road from St Day road to Busveal via Ninnis, everything seems to fit perspective/layout wise?......Until something else crops up maybe.

Having second thoughts now, the house is further to the east:(

A close up of the front row shows the buttons on the correct side so I think the plate was printed the correct way around.

Certainly has a 'Camborne/Redruth area' feel to it. The proximity of the houses must limit it to only a few possibilities. Wherever tis their a great looking bunch. Hands like shovels on most of them!

Far too clever for me.

Don't think its Michell's engine. She has a double drum, although only one would be visible from side view, and a flywheel and sweep rod as it was a winder. Picture looks more like a pumping engine arrangement. Michell's also had a wooden shed roof type structure over the drum and flywheel to stop brake slipping if it was raining, as sometimes happens in Cornwall! Also I think houses in background are different to ones behind Michell's.

As a little nit-pick Michell's engine is NOT spelt with a letter "T" in its name. Sorry to be a bit pedantic.

The houses on Agar Road would be too far away to appear so large in the picture. These seem to be situated on the mine site itself and the centre of the building looks industrial.
Curious it has a chimney on each end, giving the appearance of a residential property, but could well be the mine office.
There was an engine house on Caravan Shaft (about 150 yds south of Michell's whim engine) in living memory, which I understand was demolished in the 1960's. I haven't seen any pictures of it, but there has to be some around.

I have discussed this with a couple of friends and after trawling through many photo's we have come to the conclusion it is Wheal Gerry Camborne.
The shaft is near the junction of Eastern Lane and Park Road.

Nice one Paul!
This picture was found at a car boot sale in a dirty old frame, and barely visible through the glass. The print had faded to a nicotine yellow and a touch of photoshop has retrieved to a decent picture again.
Are there any other pictures of Wh Gerry in existence?
I know the location well, having lived just down the road at Roscroggan I would pass this site on my way into Camborne.

Not sure about photos but there is a very nice illustration of the Wheal Gerry whim in 1745.

I don't have any myself but I'll see what I can drum up.
It appears your photo' was taken at the closure of the mine.
It looks like the pit-work is being withdrawn and there is a new shear leg inside the conventional one, possibly because of rotten timber.
There are several pump rods on the ground and the bob plat seems to be cut back, so maybe the engine is already out of the house? I've tried with a glass but I can't see any bob.

T.A Morrison in Cornwall's Central Mines: The Northern District, has a picture of Gregory's Shaft, Wheal Gerry section, South Roskear (Plate 38) which this picture is not (chimney seems separate). Plate 37 shows another interesting general view. There's a good description on pages 293 - 307 which might on further investigation help to identify this shaft.
