I believe the correct term is "looking into it."

It's within yards of old coal workings, I would suggest old tip material washing out.

Might even be part of one of the old 'forgotten culverts' under the tip failing.

I can remember Nanty Station when it was lit by Tilley lamps, a very busy place in the 50s.

The actual hole is at the high side of a retaining wall at a gap in the building line.

This poor chap fell down it!
A 60-year-old man has spoken of the terrifying moment he fell 10ft down a hole when it suddenly opened up in the pavement.

The man said he felt like he was “floating through the air” as the pavement, which he said appeared to be intact, gave way beneath him as he walked in Nantyffyllon near Maesteg on Thursday morning.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he fell at least 10 feet into darkness.

With no one around to help, he used his mobile phone to call a friend that lives on the other side of the road. His friend brought a ladder, which he used to climb out of the two metre-square cavity.

Thanks for the update.

I was thinking of having a walk up the rear lane to get a look at the wall from the lower level as various maps seem to indicate the coal outcrops at a higher level.

Still looking tip or culvert related at the moment.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
