I remember boiling some sulphuric acid in the kitchen to concentrate it when I was young (using one of mother's prestige stainless pans). It was going great and then there was this very vigorous reaction where everything went a greeny brown and it filled the kitchen up with fumes.

Naturally, mother still wonders what happened to her pan.

Sounds like it munched through the s/s bottom of the pan and had a dicky fit when it reached the copper heat conductor :o
