As above, shaft sinking to commence on Friday 😞. Am I correct in assuming that with Thoresby and Kellingley due to shut as well, that by the year's end there'll be no more deep mines?

Ah yes - that'll teach me to post before looking!

Re: "sinking" - that'll be me bypassing maturity and passing straight through to senility then :stupid:

Except for evaporite mines, some of which exceed the depth of deep coal mines...

Tonto, I hear that they will start to fill the shafts at Hatfield on Friday. I guess access is going to be difficult afterwards.

Bloody shame though, it was only a couple of months ago that Hatfield were looking at finance for developing a new face.

It is a great shame. I guess they are the victims of a 'perfect storm' so far as the coal market is concerned - declining useage due to power station closures/ environmental levies, surplus production due to the rise in US gas fracking. I work in a building right next to the railway at Gateshead - even the amount of imported coal traffic passing us in recent weeks has dropped to a fraction of what is was a few months ago.
I had been trying to sort out a visit to Hatfield since last November - 'no go' due to the new face coming on stream, then 'no visits until further notice'. It looks like the only way now will be on the back of a lorry load of limestone!
