Hi all,

I'm looking a map of all known/recorded mines in the UK - does this exist anymore?

I don't need anything specific, but just a comprehensive template that maps the locations/ underground routes of around the UK.

If anyone could point in me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated!

Dan

The Coal Authority and the BGS have information on locations of underground workings known to them but I don't know what terms they would allow access to their datasets, and what they have are by no means exhaustive.

I very much doubt there is a single, authoritative map with *everything* on it. I think a lot of us know of mines not recorded on any map.

That's a very tall order Dan! Not asking for much then!

Just chalk mines alone, we had over 8000 locations recorded.. :ohmygod: And underground plans/surveys will only exist for a fraction of the known workings found in the UK

Given your username, curious to ask, what are you needing this info for? Sounds for commercial reasons..

Dan,

if you're interested in the area from a little north of Leeds and Bradford (Shipley & Baildon), Huddersfield and Halifax to just south of Stocksbridge and across east to the outskirts of Wakefield, I have compiled a map (work still in progress and expanding all the time) of getting close to all shafts, drifts and adits (many of them named) in the West Yorkshire area. The drift and adits are only locations, mostly without their true orientation.

Let me know if there are any bits you need. (Applies to everyone else, too)

Agree, I would be wary of offering this kind of info, especially if if it includes the location of open adits & shafts without knowing a lot more about the enquirer! 😉

I hadn't noticed the commercial aspect. Thanks for pointing it out.

I have already vehemently rejected requests for printing up and selling parts of my map in the past, and only offer it to fellow researchers as an aid to their projects.

The mining Authority have there web site which gives positions of the coal mines they know off, before around 1875 there are thousands they know nothing about. Then there are all the other types of mines, ganister, clay and Elland flags just to name my local ones.
You should do like the rest of us and start digging out old plans and Geology Plans.
There is a book for sale at the mining museum (Wakefield)which just gives the name of the mines the author knows off.
I would like to be given all the mines so I could publish it and I am sure 'Yorkshireman' would also.
'Yorkshireman's' Big Plan has taken a long time to build up and he is still adding names of mines we have found. There is also copyright problems. I have discussed this with him about selling copies, but without fully looking into this and possible liabilities I have not gone further.
Only this last week I have got my hands on another set of plans for above and below ground mine layouts round the Shuttle Eye Area.

It might be worth having a look at the Northern Mine Research Society website; they have compiled a database and map of known UK mines.

The NMRS listing is not always accurate, I spotted quite a few for Derbyshire in the wrong place, wrongly named, etc. though I still haven't found the time to send a list of corrections through. This does bring up the question of the OP's intentions, if this is to produce a commercial product then that's a big can of worms to open, given it will get used in researching properties for sale - if someone pulls out of a property sale on the basis of information drawn from a commercial product which is later shown to be incorrect, does the seller have grounds for comeback against the provider of that product?

As Dr J has now drawn our attention to the possible commercial and/or unknown motives of the OP, might it be a good idea to hold fire on more help until further information from the OP is coming?

Looking at the Arrow Media website, a Discovery Channel program entitled, 'When Mines Attack!' or suchlike seems a more likely possibility... ::)

It would be fair to assume that the program will be an hour long. Well 30 minutes not including adverts. 25 of those 30 minutes will doubtless be recaps of what you've just watched a matter of mere moments ago.

Maybe, but I would still think it better to err on the side of caution!

I'm not certain is worth too much concern to be perfectly honest. The item he has asked for does not exist in any meaningful form and from the way he has worded his request I suspect he has little notion of the sheer scale and complexity of such a thing were it the case it did exist!

I suspect it would take a super-computer to be able to deal with the image file of the map alone were it complete!

I don't know, servers with 64 or 128GB and 48 cores are not *that* expensive nowadays (compared to a "Supercomputer"). Gonna need a big old net connection if it's not stored locally though, but BT are testing 800Mb/s!

Agreed, some of the machines bitcoin miners are using with multiple graphics cards can chew through a lot of processing pretty quick!

Indeed they are, GPGPU's are fantastic at certain FP calculations, but Bitcoin (and litecoin) miners have moved onto ASIC now. Far better return, far lower running costs.

A quick "I wonder" gives me about £4K plus VAT for a 48 core, 128GB 1U rack, without heading into node/blade territory. Way cheaper than I imagined it would be.
