Can anyone give any example of water supply being taken from mines, particularly by pumping, before ca 1900?. This is on behalf of someone researching a site in Poland which used an early Boulton Watt engine and by the late 19thC was supplying water to a huge area, from a lead mine. The first site that came to my mind was the pumping from the Derwent Mines (was that Consett Water Co?) but I don't know if that started that early. The NMRS volume might have the answer but I don't have that immediately to hand. Also Clive Mine in Shropshire (small scale), again I don't know when that began.

I know there was some use of mines to supply water before 1900 in the Peak but this was generally informal, and of the bucket-on-rope variety - I'm not aware of any organised/official pumping using a mine as its source round here before the 20th century.

It was pretty common in Cornwall for people to use adits as water sources, both from working mines (yes, I know!!!) and abandoned ones. People have pumped from shafts for water, but it has been from abandoned mines and only recently was the Wheal Daniell SW Water pumping gear taken to bits.

Drilling water bore holes can get exciting if there are deep adits....or dry stoping!

Scott Level and Yew tree level at Snailbeach were both used for drinking water.

I recall and adit being dammed for water supply at Drws-y-coed (near the back of the ruined terrace).

Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

keresley colliery (later Coventry colliery) supplied approx. 1/8th of the city's water pumped from behind the shaft lining for many years.
Newdigate colliery at Bedworth also supplied water from shaft to the local authority.
Binley colliery had a spring in the pit bottom that the men preferred for their water bottles.
