Where would you expect to find the mining capital of England and Wales, asks Anthony Reuben.

Perhaps you'd think of Redcar in the North East or Selby in Yorkshire.

Suppose they mean Boulby but don't know of anybody who manages to keep a head balanced upon their shoulders who thinks that Boulby is in Redcar itself...

There may be a lot of people employed in gravel extraction in Spelthorne for all I know, but some decades ago there were far, far more men employed in extracting and processing materials (I hesitate to use the word minerals) from Surrey, especially in the east. Forget the few ancient underground sites - look at the surface pits - sand, fullers earth, chalk, clay - all major industrial activities in the area, all of which would have been recorded in national statistics. Stuff and nonsense? Were these gravel workers or administrative mining company employees making it up on the recent census, then? It's an odd title for the thread, I have to say.

Well I don't think you've understood it. Its a bit of the light-hearted stuff that journalists use to fill space.

The article is about data from the 2011 Census. The oil and gas people at the BP offices in Surrey are obviously included in the "mining" classification. Likewise, isn't there an oil refinery on Teesside, near Redcar?

I don't see any loony propaganda.

Well put, Trewillian. And it's not news either. I knew of this odd statistic quite some time ago.

Thank you for that.

I will now look for Saggar-Maker's-Bottom-Knockers in Stoke.

Some census entries have to be taken with a pinch of salt, especially entries from the aspiring class.

Master Porcelain Finisher ... Aka chief toilet cleaner, anyways time for a good ol' stank up the burras.

As a Mining Engineer who, as it happens, was working in Surrey last week, underground, I have responded to the Beeb to help them confirm the statistic.........

No honest, I really do have a sagger makers marl cutter!
When I was 15 (early 1970s) I had a holiday/weekend job as a labourer in an old Victorian potbank.
One of my tasks was to clear out the long disused sagger makers shop & the marl cutter was the only thing I saved.
The place would have made a terrific museum as when the bottle ovens went out of use the place was just locked up & left. But it was all burnt or skipped - seems like vandalism now 😢

Quite so.

I remember over 40 years ago, the local historian in Eyam (Clarence Daniel for those familiar with the area, a polite and mild mannered man who worked at Ladywash) being incandescent when a farmer demolished one of the engine house chimneys on Eyam Edge.

The farmer would no doubt be prosecuted now.

I posted this in 2012 from the BBC's 2011 Census report:-

"More people in London's Kensington and Chelsea describe themselves as working in mining and quarrying than in Gateshead".

Aye, the sound of clogs tramping down Sloane Street on their way to Harvey Nick's......
