While visiting friends of my wife's today at the far end of Westerdale, I noticed what looked like a shale tip on the moors beyond their farm. Have any of you Clevelanders had a look up there, and if so, is it a jet/coal/ironstone mine or trial?

Depend that your calling the 'far-end' :)

There are jet working on both sides of 'Top End' on the East

And on the West

The shallow slope of the hill doesnt seem to have been very kind to them with most of them collapsed after just a few yards.

Local legend says you could walk right throught from one side to the other, but I think thats utter clap-trap.

A bit higher up theres an area called the 'Blue Shale' which looks like it could be some Alum workings, but i've never seen any documentary evidence for it.

There are a few other small jet workings scattered around the Stockdale area, but i've never got up to them.

Down to the south of the village beyond High House Farm, at NZ 64978 02960. You can see a sizeable shale tip on Google Earth, we're hoping to be back up there later in the summer, if so I'll have a look up there and see what I can find.

Never been up that far, but around the 250m contour, so almost certainly jet.

Looks interesting. I could check it out when I visit the Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge on the 7th of June.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
