Drove past today and there are signs up stating that the footpaths through the site are closed due to;

Quote:

"likelihood of danger to the public and permit remedial works to be carried out to a dangerous structure adjacent to the said footpath."

I had a quick look around, and yes the winding house roof has now come down, but i wouldn't say that the place was anymore dangerous than it ever has been! Hope the headstock survives, a drive through the hills wouldn't be the same without them there. 😢

Precis: Durham Council seeking to issue a Building Preservation Notice, due to the historic significance of the site.

Let's hope that's what the remedial work is concerned with.

Cheers Rik. I can't see the owner coming up with the cash for the repairs anytime soon, BPN or no BPN.

I know the owner tried find a society/museum who would be willing to have the head stocks in an effort to preserve it with no such luck!

As I understood it the planning permission for Grove Rake stipulated that once mining ended the site had to cleared

The owners wanted the headgear to be preserved but it was supposed to be removed.

Reading the notice from Durham CC they consider that any conditions that were applied to the planning permissions are now unenforceable.

I'm impressed that DCC consider the site worthy of preservation; in my patch the Borough Council have shown little consideration with industrial history unless 'Time Team' were to be involved then the bandwagon would be rolled out!

It's obvious that such a unique site as Grove Rake needs support, perhaps the formation of 'Friends of Grove Rake' could do that with an idea of preserving the surface remains as long as possible in collaboration with the site owner.

Jagman is correct- the only reason that the owner was going to demolish it was because of pikeys nicking bits of it which is obviously a liability! and the land on which it sits is leased with a covenant to put it back to its original state when it comes to an end.

only reason what's left of the smaller winding engine for No 1 Shaft is till there is the buggers couldn't get it out of the building. They had it away with everything else, including the No 1 shaft headgear in broad daylight
