are you asking about the blacking or the mill setup? I cannot help with the mill but blacking as far as I'm aware is a coating applied to sand moulds/cores to improve the surface finish of the casting and also as a release agent, they tend to use graphite these days, sprayed on like paint. I would imagine the older blacking mills to be rather like a gunpowder mill, as it needs to be fine
