Just a little more! The next incident, was a major accident, but happily not like the previous incident a fatality. It took place in June 1990, when an explorer fell off a ladder in the hydraulic shaft in Elliot's string. It took COMRU, 3 hrs to reach the guy and 5 hrs to get him out! They say that it was one of the most difficult rescues they have completed.
After all this work little has been added except on the peripheries of the mine. The major exception being that of Nick Green, who in Oct. 2012, discovered the Old Flat Cross cut and in the process solved the problem of how ore was removed from the Flatts without dragging it through Hethrington's x cut. We have achieved a lot in 50 years!

Wasnt 1990 John , I was on that rescue and only moved to Cumbria in 1991 didnt join COMRU till 92/93 and was a couple of years after that we got the guy out of the Hydraulic Shaft, we had another in there a few years later for a member of an group taken in by a local Outdoor Centre who was unconcious due to drugs and alcohol in the back flats on the way to Wheel Flats!

Just checked it was June 2000 for the Hydraulic Shaft incident and Aug/Sept 2001 for the Drug incident in Smallcleugh

Thanks for that Colin, I had made a mistake with the date. It was June 2000. I made a mistake when I put it up.
The main idea with this posting is to get these dates down correctly, so I really appreciate your contribution.

I thought I would like to bring everyone up to date with this thread.
Having received many contributions to it I would like to thank everyone who helped me with it.
N.M.R.S. will include an updated account in British Mining No 100 which is normally published around Christmas time.

Re the Hydraulic Shaft incident.
It was Jim Rothery chairman of West Cumbria MRG and I have the journal write up on it entitled " The Rise and fall of Chairman Jim"
Can scan for you if you don't have it.

As you know Roy I was a member of W.C.M.R.S. for most of of the time it was in existence.

Mr Rothery is not mentioned by name, since clearly, as pointed out by yourself, in the article from the journal 'he had done something, rather stupid'.
However the incident is included as, are, I think the majority of the major recent events.
(No I did not include, coming across a football match in the Ballroom involving a dog!)

We did get an enquiry about a brass band wanting to record in The Ballroom. I do not know whether they ever made it...?
