Hi this is a message for leeW, I live at the pump house at hemingfield colliery (you visited it last summer) just to let you know there are some men in there clearing trees and weeds and apparently they are looking to preserve it and make it into a museum/place of interest so fingers crossed that this goes ahead and the pit site will be saved 🙂 😉

In spite of this place being described in one website as "the best remaining 1840s colliery in England" it does not appear to be either Listed or Scheduled therefore not protected.

Getting the place protected may be a good idea; except if you are living there in which case it could cause you problems or extra expense if you wanted to do any alterations.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

It did surprise me a little, when I found out it wasn't listed or scheduled. Hopefully this can be sorted out. But eh, it only has two Cornish Engine Houses. But then again, Elsecar (just down the road) with its Newcomen Engine House with the engine, isn't listed (World Heritage/Scheduled tho).

Received this from Steve Grudgings in last few days.

Folks,

Please excuse this "broadcast" mail but I wanted to let you know that (finally) we (Friends of
Hemingfield Colliery) completed the acquisition of the site last Friday.

To put it into context for those of you NOT familiar with the site, when ITV were looking for
visible remains of South Yorkshire's mining industry to illustrate a recent feature on the 1984
Miners Strike, this site with its twin headgears and engine houses was the only one they could find!

There is lots to tell but key points and draft messages are as follows:

Group Name - Friends of Hemingfield Colliery (FOHC)

Group Purpose - To establish and operate the Hemingfield Colliery site, with and for the community,
focusing on celebrating local mining and related heritage.

Legal Status - FOHC is a company limited by guarantee ( the most suitable one for "not for profit"
organisations)

Email Address - [email protected] ( web site TBC)

Facebook Page - Friends of Hemingfield Colliery

Priorities:

-Get FOHC fully established and key posts filled
-Get the Hemingfield site safe and secure
-Review overall direction and strategy with stakeholders
-Build active local and national support
-Establish a sound financial footing for FOHC

As you would expect, there is much to do to repair the ravages of time and vandalism and it will
be some time before we can open to the public and so in the interval we would be grateful if you
could:

1. Please circulate this note to those that may be interested within your own organisation/network

2. Please alert us to any information you may have about the site

3. Please alert is to any sources of funding, expertise or help that you may be aware of.

4. Let me know if you DONT want to be included on further updates

You are welcome to visit but suggest you wait until we have addressed the basic safety and security
issues

Many Thanks

Steve Grudgings  -Friends of Hemingfield Colliery
