Not really a mining topic but I thought it might be worth mentioning as a lot of folk sell on UK Ebay.

As of Sept 4th I think it is, private sellers will be charged the usual Ebay fee when stuff is sold PLUS a fee on the postage cost....So far as I am aware. Make of it what you will.

I stopped selling on there when someone tried to stiff me for a very nice camera and lens, but it sounds about right. Last time I looked at selling something, I figured they were going to skim 20% off the top in total. **** that, I'd rather keep it. I buy only on there.

Have not checked this out, but WTF has postage/transport/delivery got to do with E-bay?? surely it is a private agreement between the vendor and purchaser??

:offtopic:

P.S. Thanks for making us aware of this shameful scam!.

SO sellers will start listing stuff as 'collection only' and lump postage in the item cost. just ebay tightening the screws! (I do quite a bit on there as you can tell...)

What difference would that make if the fees are charged on the total cost including postage anyway ?

with the current system, postage is zero with 'collection only', so no fee can be charged on that. they might alter the system of course

OR, list their direct access details so that buyer gets in touch direct, e-bay gets minimal returns, usually my preferred option as a buyer.

Plenty if your auctioning items at 99p as my wife does sometimes and the postage is £2 or so, it's extractum cashum I'm afraid.

So far as I am aware Ebay bought Paypal some time ago, weather they still have it I can't say for sure. It's all a bit of a monopoly maybe but there yer go, as Boris Yeltsin once said...You can build your throne with swords but yer can't sit on it for long or words to that effect.

No, what I meant was with the new charges it will cost you the same either way. There would be no point doing 'collection only' and lump postage in the item cost as was suggested earlier in the thread.

I'm not arguing that everyone gets gouged a little more.

My applogies, I was thinking it through from the sellers point of view, apparently Ebay Stateside have been doing this for a while and it's not gone down without protest.
I agree with the other poster that what the hell has postage got to do with auction commision anyways.....but having said that Paypal charge for the total cost of the transaction so in effect the barons are still shafting the surfs but twice in one go....but having said that also, I'm sure many of us have seen new stuff on Ebay from the far east and other places where the price is £1 for a £51 item and the postage charge is £50, maybe it's to combat that, either way we all lose.

precisely. however as a pro for the buyer there would be room using collection only for the buyer and seller to come to an agreement over postage via email..and of course the whole transaction can be done outside ebays system by requesting an invoice through paypal. there are ways around but seem to be fewer and fewer as time goes on

Yes I guess there are ways round it eg: collection only but what would concern me is how long would it be before some nutter on the bus turned up at the house.

I tend to ask if i can collect before bidding , it sometimes pays dividends two examples
first i bought some miniatures off a guy in Doncaster , i was in Doncaster when i phoned him for his address
He said do you collect full size lamps ?only i have a box full in my loft
he was an ex deputy from Askern he had 8 lamps four of which i bought
second a guy posted a picture of several lamps on ebay £30
i asked him what i was bidding on all of them , just the ones in the box or one lamp
when he emailed back he said It's for all 9 lamps but i have got 10 spare glasses as well
i bought them, (£64) when i phoned him to get his address he said "the picture was wrong there are 10 lamps and 16 spare glasses
Now that has got to be the deal of the century !

Trouble is, Ebay don't actually like private sellers despite the fact that we're the ones who got them where they are today.
The majority of complaints, which cost eBay in man hours, come from amateur sellers. They much prefer dealing with high volume business sellers where their automated systems can be left to run on their own with little human intervention.
So they'll just carry on increasing their charges and lowering their standards of service to private sellers until we've all gone to Gumtree - which is owned by guess who?

Despite being an eBay seller for the best part of a decade, i've found recently that for the right sort of rarer items you can make much more by selling on Amazon.

Its more of a waiting game, but i've sold stuff on there for literally double the price I could have hoped for on eBay.

But don't try it with CDs / DVDs and common books as all of that is sewn up by automated sellers who undercut you by 1p within minutes of listing.

I wonder why about the reasons for that... I reckon it's because everybody that goes on ebay expects to make a real bargain while when going on amazon people are ready to spend a bit of money...?

Totally :offtopic: apologies to anyone who wants to be reading about mines rather than making a few quid on the side.

This reasons behind this one are completely unfathomable to be honest.

The item in question was a "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" chess set which I picked up in a charity shop for £2.50

Now back in May someone managed to flog one of these for £75 on eBay then they tailed off to £23 £16 £10
All through July and August not a single one gets sold even with starting bids down as low as £7.50

I noticed that on Amazon a new one is listed as £385.20 (I sh1t you not) and a used one at £36

I stuck it on Amazon then at £20 because then mine looks like a fantastic bargain (if you only check Amazon, even though they are not selling for half that on eBay)

It took a couple of months but it sold.

Conclusion ?
People are daft 🙂 🙂

Surprisingly easy to get around. If they do twig you "circumventing" the ban however, it's not unusual to get banned from the site.
