That was a nice little trip, not an extensive mine, but interesting and well worth a visit.

Does anyone remember seeing this before?

Enjoyable trip last night guys, with quite a lot to see despite the small number of chambers.

However, if I had remembered to bring the Conglog book with me we would have realised that there are four chambers on the floor above us which look as though they can only be reached by an abb from the surface - return trip perhaps?

That shard is not recent - have a look at Miles's Conglog Trip Report dating from 2005 on the ME site.

Looks like an interesting little mine - I'll have to get up there for a look-see myself.

Thanks for the tip Clive, I'd quite forgotten about Miles' report despite reading it a few months ago!
Pleased to say that the water level's a fair bit lower now.

Don, I'd be up for a return trip to see the upper chambers.

If I remember it was up to my shoulders, so say 5 foot/4 foot 10 maybe.

Who's a silly billy then!! When I referred to the chambers on the level above, I should have realised that these are what everybody calls the 'pits above the track'. However, they are genuine interconnected chambers, but completely opened out to bank.

I've just been back up there for another look. The adit which breaks into the top of the big chamber is easily found just to the left of the four pits (looking up from the track) at about the same level as the pit mouth. It's about 120ft long with a kink half-way & slopes gently down from the adit portal, hence the water draining into the chamber. There is a rather old 8mm bolt with a 'Troll' hanger about 15ft back from the drop into the chamber. In addition, there are two old iron bars driven into the wall close to the drop which look a lot safer than the bolt should anyone want to do some SRT practice.

According to the Conglog book, the adit leading into the pits is 'run in'. In fact it's open right up to the pit but maybe impassable due to fall within the pit (The water in the adit was over CWD & I hadn't taken the waders this time). If the adit is no-go, it should be an easy drop into the end pit on the right.

What about the tunnel at the back of one of those pits its about 15ft down the back wall? 😉

Dave, according to the Conglog book, that tunnel in the back wall of the third pit (from the left) is the remaining part of the adit to the topmost level. There is no mention of any working off this adit, but the book does not make it clear if any inspection was carried out to verify this.

Looking at it this afternoon, there was quite a lot of water running down from this tunnel, perhaps more than I would have expected from a 'dead-end' adit.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
