Cliquey bunch aren't you.
So one of my friends supporting me after personal abuse from you counts as being cliquey, does it? Just putting an emoticon after the abuse it doesn't make it acceptable, and it won't endear you to many of the membership on this site so look to your own attitude before criticising anyone else, and I refer back to my earlier comment about understanding the culture and ethos of any online forum before pitching in!
Appologies to the OP for all this, but when you get an arse of a reply like;
Note the "easily accessible" bit in the original poster's request, I don't think places you have to break into qualify as that....
from a simple suggestion, it's bound to get someones back up.Middleton is easily accessible if you look hard enough (and has been for a long time) and so is a suitable suggestion.
Was the OP really wanting as part of his holiday to go into a mine that you have to go furtively poking around to find a way into, runs the risk of getting your collar felt, not to mention the risk of getting lost in several miles of pillar-and-stall workings? Somehow I doubt it....
If the owners of the place don't seal it, it's there to exploit. I also don't like it being implied that i break into places. 😠
Oh, so it's all Tarmac's fault for not stopping you going in is it? Since 2005, they've spent a lot on continually re-securing the Hopton Wood Fan drift, to the extent of having to put in a second line of grill, plus ongoing security cover costs. Why? Because if someone comes to grief in a mine on care and maintenance and it's been slapped all over the internet that people are breaking in, the Mines Inspectorate will likely hold the responsible manager negligent for stopping them getting in, which may not be the case if trespass is not being advertised to the world. There is another Derbyshire mine on C&M I can think of that the owners were willing to turn a blind eye to exploration of when it was discreet, but they took a different line once stuff started appearing online. As for the implication, in a strict legal sense "breaking in" does not necessarily require you to break something to get in.
As for a "willy waving contest", i have no interest. We've all been places that are a t**t to get down, whether it be abseils and rebelays that go on forever, or a bitch of a crawl - that's why we're here in the first place.
I notice the mines you quote in your intro thread are walk-in and walk-round stone/slate mines, none of which are exactly difficult to get in to and the site's stated purpose is this: "Mine exploration, photographs and mining history for mine explorers, industrial archaeologists, researchers and historians". I'm here for the love of old mines and their industrial archaeology, so any excitement or sense of achievement I get from exploring difficult ground is a bonus. What do you care about old mines other than the fact they provide you with another playground?
Follow the horses, Johnny my laddie, follow the horses canny lad-oh!
