Not sure if anyone can help, but I have been trying to find some information on Cotgrave Colliery.

A shot in the dark I know, but does anyone have any info on the fan drift at the pit. I am interested in its dimensions and its position in relation to the upcast shaft.

I have been to the Coal Authority and they don't have any records of its subsurface position other than the depth it intersects the shaft.

Thanks in advance.

You might try the National Archives at Kew, amongst their records they list several photographs of the fan drift during construction from which you might be able to interpert some useful information

See by way of example:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C11889811

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C11889868

etc

It is possible that there are files relating to the construction of the shafts etc in their catalogue

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/

See by way of example

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C5845528

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C327361

I suspect that the information you are looking for will be hidden away somewhere at Kew

It might also be worth visiting a library with old copies of the Transcations of the Institute of Mining Engineers (The Mining Engineer) or the Colliery Guardian as there is a very good chance that there would have been papers published on the construction of the infrastructure at Cotgrave (try BGS, Leeds or Nottingham University libraries, Neville Hall in Newcastle)

Hello.
Not much information but I drove a NCB lorry to the sight in the middle of a field where a member of the royal family was going to dig the first sod. A new road was made to it and after the sod was dug they ripped the road up. I worked at Radford colliery in various positions from 1948 to 1962.
Hope it is of some interest.
