Nice historic pictures of Skinningrove Jetty.

This jetty was built of concrete using local slag in the 1880s so that pig iron could be brought down an incline from the ironworks and loaded into ships for passage to Grangemouth and the continent.

It was in use into the 1970s for abstracting seawater to a heat exchange plant for cooling freshwater used in cooling the blast furnace plant.

After disuse (except by local fishermen) it was an embarrassment to the local council until money was found recently to patch it up and make it safe for public use (including the provision of plastic fencing!).

Historic pictures I say because during the scheme the pump room at the end was filled with concrete and evidence of rail tracks and other fittings was removed, so proving that history starts today.

Yes, I'll have it - what is it?

There's a few particularly good photographs of the works on the Britain From Above website although the pier is distant or just out of shot in all.

Thanks for the additional info Simon.

for those interested, more images and info are available as follows:

Although the jetty's future is now secure, it was a disappointment to find that the really interesting bits had been demolished, filled or sealed-off, and as you rightly say, the photos I took by chance in 2012 record a vanished, and therefore historical situation.

Maybe I should have photographed the plastic rails too, cos THOSE babies aren't going to be around for long

It is a shame its no longer like it used to be, but what was a fantastic place to us was a death-trap dungeon to the general public and other option was probably total demolition.

I've added my photos to the album (the full set of Hidden Teesside ones) now that its 'gone'.
