We have always parked on the Stanhope side of the open gate which crosses the track.
The reason for this, is on one occasion I had a note placed on my windscreen asking me to phone Stanhope Police Station.
My wife had been phoned by them to ask where I was.
On another occasion, friends of ours, ours, were met by a policeman who asked them to accompany him to the station where they were 'grilled' by the Sargent as to what they were doing in the mine.
This was the late George Farr, a Hexham dentist and Norman Thomson, who was a lecturer at Carlisle Technical college.
Clearly there has been a history of animosity here!
