On Saturday ,My Son and I visited Rampgill Mine and noticed that the safety door leading to the Brewery Shaft has been totally trashed ,This sort of vandalism is foolish and also dangerous , :guns: ,has anyone else noticed this?

By 'trashed' do you mean actually smashed to pieces ?

As far as I am aware some 'enterprising' person or persons unknown remover the entire door very neatly - you can't see that it ever was there.

This was the state a few weeks ago when I was last there at least.

was ok when we were there in May and presumably when Pete J. led the trips into Scaleburn.
All seems to suggest a very recent occurence. The doors seemed a little ornate and hence may have attracted the people who collect these old artefacts, not knowing that in fact they were relatively recent! Prior to N.H.P.T.- there was of course nothing at all.

Some people do not seem to think about their actions.

They certainly weren't there on the recent Scaleburn trip. The wrought iron gates were though...

Looking at the vandalism and damage that has been caused in Smallcleugh from the pulling down of walls to the theft of artefacts and the destruction of mineral formations I rather despair of people both of the yob and mineral collecting type. I know a lot of this happened in the past when there was less respect for minerals & artefacts but it certainly still goes on.

Interesting thought that taking minerals from Nenthead is effectively stealing from the church and making money from it compounds the crime. OK picking up bits of galena from the waste is hardly stealing the lead off the roof but smashing formations to get stuff to sell rather than leaving it for others to appreciate is less morally sound. I like it not.

The wooden door in the other passage had gone (it was in bits) when we had a look in their,after the meeting at the old visitors centre.
As to the minerals they are some from the Swaledale mines on ebay and the mines are named ??????

Brewery Shaft is a freehold of NPHT in Administration. The shaft is also a scheduled ancient monument. The door and frame was installed to protect the lighting equipment and to prevent accidental access to the shaft by inexperienced visitors. It is in all our interests to ensure that there are no accidents in Brewery shaft because the liability remains with NPHT and its administrators. Perhaps we could ask the persons who stole the timber to return and build a simple safety fence. If this cannot be arranged, it might be possible to arrange for a safety fence to be provided.

NPHT was always willing to provide access to those who had the courtesy to ask.

I doubt the sort of person who would nick something from the mine in the first place will suddenly feel guilty about it.
