In one hole and out of another. Largest surface distance between the two points wins.

The contenders are...?

Bonus categories for longest trip from the entrance point; and longest underground trip without doubling back.

Working mines excluded, so Bolby is out 😉

The Gwynfynydd / Clogau to Manod through-trip suggested by Edge of Darkness is disqualified I take it ::)

Caplecleugh to Haggs must be a contender, particularly if to take in the Brownley High. Level & Jug Vein.

Going to get yourself up to Nent at some point? Sure we can arrange a mega through trip for you. 🙂

Nenthead Traverse must be a contender for a direct route through 5 mines, it could probably be doubled if you took extended routes in all the mines

Although if you start faffing about in a bord and pillar workings mine you can easily reach hundreds of (identical) miles.

It's got to be a good couple of miles even in a straight line?

It's right up Vanoord's street. Tall wide passages and barely even damp underfoot.

Would love to do it again. I seem to recall we mostly jibbed Brownley / Haggs last time?

Entrance to exit a mere 1.3 miles as the crow flies, but underground it must be 5 miles minimum.

Going a silly route around Smallcleugh and adding the Brownley round-trip without retracing any steps could easily add another 3 miles ?

Follow Rockchick and it could add a few more 😉 Please don't tell her I said that though...

says in small voice:

Jacks to Backdoor via the "rest" of Box - must be a few miles of passage there!

(I'm sure one of the "Flatminers" will pop up later and confirm this!!)

I did measure the distance on the Box surveys with a bit of string once. In at Jacks and out at Back door taking in all the usual tourist bits, inc the red door was about 2 miles i think.

Back in the'50's or '60's, Operation Mole made a film of a through trip from a mine up near Wirksworth to a sough tail down near Cromford. I only saw it once, so can't remember details, it was quite an acheivement back then!

Unfortunately, that film (the Underground Journey) wasn't entirely true to life - it claimed to be a round trip going in Meerbrook Sough, through the mines of the Gang vein, and out through Cromford Sough, which theoretically might be possible with a lot of digging out! However, it was filmed in bits and joined together, apparently some of the sequences were filmed in a quarry at night!

Dave Webb transferred the film to DVD a few years back if you want a copy, they're on sale at the museum....

South Llyn Y Pandy, (Rhyd Alyn) to Bagillt (Milwr Tunnel) surely the ultimate through trip if you have the balls. 😮

My suspicion would be that the Milwr system might provide a very decent distance from from entry point to exit point - although to get out at Bagillt, I reckon you'd need a drought!

A jolly trip in Old Millclose from Shale Shaft to Steaming Shaft via Top Chamber or back passage & not getting lost on way 😉

When we opened the Haggs part and then did the Greater Nenthead Traverse (traditional route), I plotted the route on a OS map. The route is 9.25km (5.8miles).

See:

http://www.mineexplorer.org.uk/throughtrips/nentheadtraverse_240509/slides/gnt_plan.html

As already mentioned you could add a lot more to this, without doubling back on yourself.
