Washery 1 - 1937

Caption: "Here small coal is being washed. After it has separated from the large coal it comes into a fast moving stream of water which sweeps it into the washboxes, one of which may be seen at the right of the picture. The water in the box is regularly pulsating , and the good coal rises to the top and is carried over the edge of the box and down the slope seen in the foreground. The heavier, waste, material sinks to the bottom of the box, where it is extracted and carried away by the bucket conveyors which can be seen rising on the left."
