Trail pit?

A trial pit, ~5m wide by ~8m deep with a face of 3m. It is situated half way up the hill from the river, down stream from the level. There are signs of disturbance or trial pitting up and down stream of the level. The trial pit is dug out from a 30' slope with moss covered slate littering the slope below. This would not be ones first choice for quarrying stone for roads or houses.
