Castle an Dinas Wolfram Mine, St. Columb Major. The photograph shows the wolfram lode exposed in the back of the 5th Level, south of New Shaft. About 2 feet wide it consists of quartz with clusters of wolfram crystals along the edges. The killas, or clay slate country rock, adjacent to the lode is tourmalinized and appears dark for a foot or so; beyond the tourmalinization it is white, soft and friable. The wolfram lode ranges from one to six feet wide but averages 3 feet and occasional branches leave it. It has a constant direction, verticality and content but southwards it splits into two or three branches each about one foot wide but still carrying wolfram. Photo P208054.
