Caption: "After it is raised to the pit head the coal goes through various processes of classification and cleaning, according to its type. It is first sized by mechanical screening - similar to riddling - into large and small sizes, the larger coal being hand picked. The small, steam-raising coal is cleaned in a washery. The photograph shows pit tubs going up to the screening room."
