When the arches were constructed, it was also necessary to protect the level which connected the head of the inclines to the foot of the vertical balance shaft. Again massive masonry was resorted to and the subsequent archway tipped over. This photo shows the archway intact before subsequent working broke through it. Just beyond Wil Roberts can be seen the waste which has collapsed into the end of the level below the boulder.
