The dams are the name given to a level connecting Cwmorthin floor C and Oakeley floor 1. Water from Cwmorthin old vein drained out into Oakeley this way. A wooden walkway supported on metal rails was constructed over this drainage channel which was later dammed to provide a cooling water supply for the Oakeley chamber 33 air compressor.
