The clay that came to the works to be processed was mined over half a mile away at the Wheal Martin pit. The clay and slurry was pumped from the pit using this wheel. The wheel is a pitch back water wheel, 35 ft in diameter. It was cast by Charlestown Foundary and erceted at WM before 1884. It continued to power pumps until 1940 when it ceased work and was fully restored in in 1976.
