Swanwick New Pit headgear and chimney circa 1960. 1,472 tons of concrete was used in the construction of the headgear and it was designed so it would need one and a half times the breaking strain of the winding rope to pull it over. The chimney was 204 feet high and at the time of building was the highest in Derbyshire thanks to Mr Morewood who had an extra 4 feet added during it’s construction. The New Pit shaft was downcast and was the main shaft for turning coal at Swanwick Colliery.
