"A dry, dusty old place" as one of the original digging team described it, should have realised the potential for dry rot. 12 months on from the concreting, all was well bar the wooden ladders. A pre-treated one was perfect, another was falling to pieces. It was decided to strip out the two central ladders and replace with galvanised steel honeycomb steps, concrete steps, and steel ladders. Pre-fabricated they assembled easily underground. Note the fixing brackets, they are top, bottom, and central.
