The first (possibly) quarry on Manod Mawr, called South Pole because it was so cold that " the snot froze in the men's noses". There was a small adit here and a short cutaway adit access to the North side of the hill. Waste was simply tipped down the south side of the Manod. It was worked by a few men on an intermittent basis. Across Cwm Teigl below can be seen the adit to another mine (Cwm Teigl) and beyond that lies the Afon Gamallt with two old copper mines. The near peak is Y Garnedd and the far mountains are Arenig Fawr and Fach.
