Ordnance Survey map extract from 1850 showing the site where Smithy Wood Colliery would be established. The site is across the South Yorkshire Railway (later Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway which went on to become the Great Central railway) from earlier workings linked to Jumble Lane by a tramroad. In later years the area to the east of the railway became the very large Coke and Gas Works.
