Shop Shaft

This shaft is 40fms deep, and again one of the oldest still extant features of the mine appearing on a map of 1786. Around 1880, this shaft - otherwise a crystal clear pool 70m deep - was filled at the request of the local farmer. "Rubbish was thrown in and heaped above the mouth at surface. In a few days this was gone, and the shaft was then sollared over with timber, in which state it now remains. The stuff thrown in must have subsided into the gunnisses of the lode, perhaps after breaking through the old timber about the sides of the shaft."
