Ruins of the mercury ore processing facility

Ruins of the mercury ore processing facility at the Mariscal Mine in southern Big Bend National Park. Ore from the mine was heated in a kiln to about 350 degrees to drive off the mercury vapor. The mercury was then captured by large condensers in the upper structures. Warning signs indicate that the bricks in the ruin area still contain high levels of mercury.
