Remains of Steam Stamps

In the 1870s sand streaming operations for tin lead to the building of the small engine house which still stands today. Refuse was tipped into the surrounding shafts as a condition of their lease with the Rogers; Leeds shaft was filled hence minewater now decants exclusively from Carnarthen Shaft and Shop Shaft. It is often repeated that the engine house adjacent the track to Lower Nanceloe belongs to that of Wheal Pool; however this is a misconception. The original engine, which drained the mine to a depth 60fms sat 500m to the south on Leeds Shaft.
