Base of the No1 blast furnace completed December 1849. Curiously the furnace was the fourth and last to be built but was numbered 'one'. It was originally intended to build a 'set-piece' of four stacks when building began in 1839. At the furthest point from the blast engine house, Nos 3 and 4 were quickly built and only foundations of 1 and 2 were completed before a slump in the iron trade brought work to a halt at the site. As trade improved No2 was completed in 1845 and No 1 in 1849. Original height 45ft with 15ft boshes. Height increased to 60ft c1881.
