The pump was a 3-throw beam pump discharging into this iron trough. The pump beams were driven from a 3-throw crankshaft, itself driven by either a water turbine or a marine type condensing steam engine. The selection was made through dog clutches at either end of the crankshaft. Drive from the turbine was via belts and gearing, the steam engine drove simply through gearing.
