Pump and bob spears

This peculiar arrangement was necessitated by the rising main being higher than the bob. The blind rise above would have carried some pitwork and guides to take a cross timber the remains of which can be seen in the picture. This would be necessary to prevent the whole assembly from wobbling about all over the place.
