Old Hafodty Quarry - 1981

The original Hafodty quarry - which gave its name to the larger enterprise as "Votty" was given up for slate producing by 1870, work concentrating on Bowydd's workings as Hafodty's have faulted out. The old quarry was then utilised as a reservoir until the 1990's. This photo, taken from the Maenofferen main tip, shows the situation at the time. The Votty and Bowydd company tipped over the old Hafodty tips and levels using it's Tuxford incline from about 1912 until the 1920's when Maenofferen's own tip buried that of Votty. The Tuxford incline top was re-arranged so the traffic went to the west instead of east.
