This photo was taken from the bottom of the opencast workings looking out over the top of the spoil heap. The vast amount of spoil in this valley is quite something especially when it all dates to the 1700s and dug by hand. In the woods to the left of the photo is an untouched landscape that hasn't been ploughed for 200 years as I have found coins on the top of the spoil heaps of the Bell pits dating to the late 1700s.
