Middle Hill Colliery shaft shadows 2007

On the south side of the valley the shadows of ploughed out spoil from shafts are visible just after the field had been ploughed. I field walked over the two areas of black after it had rained and picked up 17th century pottery and a clay pipe bowl dating to the 1680s. Finding the pottery and clay pipe on top of the spoil and the lack of big lumps of spoil in the field shows they had been there a long time. Long enough for succesive generations of farmers to have ploughed them out.
