The Deep Soft seam was first opened out from no2 Shaft in 1913 and Development of the Pit bottom area was Completed at no3 Lowmoor shaft(foreground) in 1915, Coal production commenced from faces to the North and South of the Pit Bottom in 1915, and the seam was worked continuously from this date until April 1939 when production ceased due to the Butterley Companys Quota restriction. Working of the Seam was resumed in 1941 because of the demand for Coal during WW2 and was mined from this date until may 1968. The Deep soft Seam was originally scheduled for closure in 1970 in order to concentrate production from the more economical seams(Tupton, Blackshale), However the impending closure of Kirkby Colliery, served to bring forward the date , and the last Coal from 81's and 85's Districts surfaced on the 24th May 1968.
