The Blackshale Seam lies in the lower coal measures, at a depth of about 800 yards At Hucknall. The measures dip reularly to the east at about 1 in 50 and are relatively unfaulted. the only majar distturbance in the area is a 50 foot fault running north/South about half a mile to the west of the shafts. The Blackshale seam at Hucknall consists of four leaves of bright coal seperated from each other by dirt bands of varying thickness. Above the Blackshale is the Yard seam , which splits in two in this area. The lower leaf lies on Top of the Blackshale and is mined with it. The upper leaf lies at a varying distance, from a few inches to several feet above. The Blackshale and lower leaf of the Yard together vary in thickness fom 6 feet to over 8 feet. The roof strata fo0r a distance of 20 feet above consists of a weak mudstone. The floor is a soft mudstone for several feet below the Seam.
