Gitchfield Escape Winch

Jack roller (or 'Jinny' roller) for emergency access for Gitchfield Mine, driven in 1892 by Joseph Exley to supply his new Coalport Tileries (now water works site) with clay (and some coal). Clay was also taken to Exley's Jackfield works. This shaft is about 400m from the portal, and over 40m deep. It was fitted with a windlass for emergency access/escape. The Mine abandoned in 1956. Since this picture was taken on 20th December 1983, the shaft has been filled in.
