Foss Barite Mine. 1986

Mining occurs only in the summer, the ore is stockpiled at the mine gates. In winter when mining has ceased the ore is transferred to Aberdeen in 20 ton lorries where it is used for making up drilling muds for the oil industry. Portal flat, opencast barite mine. Loading crushed barite onto Volvo dumper trucks for transfer to the ore stockpile beside the public road. Note the infilled pit behind the dumper truck from which 50,000 tons of barite was removed by opencast mining around the IGS drillhole 2 location. Photo P001564.
