A fenced (but sadly choked) shaft within an ancient open work at whiteworks. Shafts were presumably timber collared, and when these rotted the resulting collapse formed the subsidence craters we see today. Note, the hilly area here appears to be the most ancient area of the mine; likely dating well before the first recorded instances of the mine. This view looks towards the more recent underground workings to the SE and over the Foxtor Mires to stream world at the head of the river Swincombe.
