Engine shaft

Even in winter with the lack of foliage the features are difficult to discern. But on the right behind the tree is a made up stone bob plat, the angle bob would have been driven by either flat rods or wire rope from the engine house immediately downhill. Looking down the shaft as much as can be done safely it is dry stone lined down to bedrock, the lining appearing to be mad up directly on the rock. Usually the lining is made up on heavy timbers supported by iron pegs, the timber rots and the shaft eventually caves in. This situation can be a menace to any explorer descending the shaft, be warned.
