This is possibly the oldest shaft of the mine, appearing on a manor map of 1771. The marsh is very wet in winter and hence an adit/leat driven through the bedrock on the western side of Loe Bar was cut in the mid 18th century to lower the water table in the lake. This shaft is 60fms deep and even today stained orange with iron/sulphide in the Wheal Pool gossan.
