The base in the foreground is the Waddle fan engine base. This was located in the corner of what was the smithy until the fan was fitted in 1863 then the building became the part of the exhaust for the fan. The remains of the fan shaft are behind now standing about 3 metres instead of 7 or 8 metres high.
