I took this photo in 1988 before the top of the shaft was knocked off. The top was brick built to seal it for the Waddle Fan to work. The cage was still hanging in the shaft at this time as the wire ropes had snagged in the top of the brick when they were cut to salvage the winding engine at the begining of the second world war. I climbed on top of the shaft so know it was brick.
